Thomas Huxley, known as "Darwin's Bulldog" was a British naturalist, author, and agnostic philosopher. He was an eminent biologist, and is well known for his work in comparative anatomy and evolutionary theory. Huxley was also an early proponent of Darwinian evolution and one of the earliest advocates of eugenics. From 1858 to 1864 he held the Blundell Chair of Natural History at the Royal College of Mines
He became a professor in zoology at University College London in 1866 and served as University Research Professor in Animal Morphology from 1873 to 1883. During this time Huxley was heavily involved in public debates and published widely in both scientific and popular journals. In October 1861 he married Henrietta ("Etty") Emma Haversham.
They had four children: Marian Henrietta (1862-1943), William Henry (1865-1879), Gertrude Elizabeth (1868-1950), and Thomas Henry (1871-1940).
